I used to think a collection was a way of holding on. I think now it was always a way of reaching out.

I have been collecting for as long as I can remember. Though I could never tell you exactly what, or why. Signs. Tags. Things other people left at the curb. Lines from books I read alone and underlined twice.

I kept everything. If I could keep the objects, maybe I could keep the feeling. Objects say more than people do. The surface of a thing and the truth of a thing are almost never the same.

Everything I owned was secretly about wanting. Everything in here was mine. And, before that, it was someone else's. I kept all of this to myself for so long. I don't want to anymore. Public Matter is what happens when I stop keeping it all to myself. Now they get to be held again.

Take what speaks to you. Keep it. Make it yours.
What's mine is yours.
